Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 20 games

Another frustrating goalless draw puts Albion onto 34 points from 20 games, their second lowest tally in a second tier campaign this century. Only in 2006, when a 3-1 defeat at Hillsborough saw Tony Mowbray’s team drop to 10th place, have the Baggies endured a worse start to a Championship campaign.

That proved to be the lowest point in that campaign as Albion lost just one of their next 16 league games, a run that saw them rise to the top of the table by the end of February, although poor form towards the end of the season saw them finish fourth.

It’s the first time the Baggies have registered successive goalless draws since the 2019/20 campaign when matches at Swansea City and at home to Birmingham City both finished 0-0 – although they were successive matches, they were separated by more than three months thanks to the shutdown of football as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The previous instance of successive goalless matches for Albion was in April 1989 when Brian Talbot’s team drew 0-0 away to Walsall and Stoke City – those results kept them in third place with just seven games of the season left and they seemed set for the play-offs that were in just their third season, but they picked up just eight points from those seven matches and finished ninth. Two seasons later, the Baggies were relegated to the third tier.
